Didn't We  Original - Key of C  Lower key - A Jimmy Webb

This time we almost made the pieces fit,
Didn't we girl?
This time we almost made some sense of it,
Didn't we girl?

This time I held the answer
Right here in my hand,
Then I touched it
And it had turned to sand!

This time we almost sang our songs in tune,
Didn't we girl?
This time we almost made it to the moon,
Didn't we girl?

This time we almost made
Our poem rhyme,
This time we almost made
That long, long climb
Didn't we almost make it,
This time?

. . . didn't we almost make it,
This time?

This was the first song that Jimmy Webb wrote as a teenager.  Oddly enough, although this song has been recorded my dozens of singers in the late sixties and early seventies (Matt Munro, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Ronnie Milsap just to name a few), this song never charted on the Top 40.  Yet this song is a standard!
