Heard Hearted Hannah                   1924. Peggy Lee, Ray Charles Singers
(The Vamp of Savannah)

In old Savannah, I said, Savannah,
The weather there is nice and warm;
The climates of the southern brand,
But here's what I don't understand;

They've got a gal there, a pretty gal there,
Who's colder than an artic storm;
Got a heart just like a stone;
Even icemen leave her alone,

    They cal her Hard Hearted Hannah, the vamp of Savannah,
    The meanest gal in town;
    Leather is tough but Hannah's heart is tougher;
    She's a gal who loves to see men suffer!

    To tease 'em and thrill 'em, to torture and kill em'
    Is her delight, they say,
    I saw her at the seashore with a great big pan;
    There was Hannah pouring water on a drowning man,
    She's Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah G.A.

You ought to see her, you ought to see her,
Outside sh's juas as soft as silk;
But socially she's hard as nails,
She's just a gal who hates the males!

And when she's nasty, oh, when she's nasty,
She's 'bout as sweet as sour milk;
Nothing she likes better than
Feedin' poisoned foot to a man,

    They cal her Hard Hearted Hannah, the vamp of Savannah,
    The meanest gal in town;
    Talk of your cold, refrigerating Mammas,
    Brother, she's the Polar bear's pajamas!

    To tease 'em and thrill 'em, to torture and kill em'
    Is her delight, they say,
    An ev'ning spent with Hannah sitting on your knees,
    Is like trav'ling through Alaska in your B.V.D's;
    She's Hard Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Savannah G.A.

A vaudeville favorite in the 1920's, this novelty song was successfully revived more than a quarter century later by Peggy Lee on a Columbia recording, and by the Ray Charles Singers on a Decca release.
