Who's peeking out from under a stairway
Calling a name that's lighter than air
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's Windy
Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy
And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds, above the clouds
Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy
Windy was written by Ruth Anne Friedman. She was a singer/songwriter living in the middle of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the music scene in the 60s. She became friends with Beach Boy Lyricist Van Dyke Parks and he introduced her to The Association who were the first to record this song. There have been other versions apparently Ruth Anne wrote the song Windy about a guy who came to visit her she said and I quote "he was staring at me as if he was going to suck the life out of me so I started to fantasize about what kind of guy I would like to be with and that was Windy - a guy - a fantasy song took me about 20 minutes to write. The only problem is I don't know a lot of guys named Windy."
When The Association got a hold of it they changed the guy to a girl but they kept the name Windy. A lot of people thought it was Wendy or they thought it was about the weather. Legendary producer Bones Howe came in and he whipped the vocal Pros in shape in The Association. He changed the song from uh Waltz to a standard 4/4 beat and he worked the guys from The Association for about 18 hours straight one night to get it many of them were exhausted and they actually lost their voices by the time it was over had to sing the last part together just to get through it with the Wrecking Crew playing on it the stellar vocals. The song became a number one smash in 1967 and then as quickly as The Association's reign began it dwindled quickly thereafter their last top 10 hit. They ruled music for two years solid and then they vanished without a trace.
